For over forty years, Barbara Nanning has been an internationally renowned artist with works in numerous public and private collections around the world. Describing herself as a ‘three dimensional designer’, the Dutch artist quickly gained global recognition for her unique vessels and sculptures.
After graduating from the renowned Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam (The Netherlands), Nanning started out her career as a ceramicist. She introduced to the medium vivid colours that had only previously been possible in painting and gave an unexpected, almost unreal dimension to her work. Nevertheless, Nanning soon took the surprising step of adding glass to her repertoire — the material on which she would eventually focus exclusively. Experimenting with pate de verre, glass blowing, and metal gilding, she fuses different worlds into an entirely personal visual language.
Nature, both organic and inorganic, is a constant source of inspiration for Nanning. She studies multifaceted crystals, soft jellyfishes, flowers and micro-organisms with a particular fascination with form, structure and geometry. Her constant thirst for new challenges has led Nanning to Novy Bor in the Czech Republic. There she enjoys the support of the most talented glassblowers and polishers, but above all the possibility of employing colour in a totally new way. In Novy Bor, Nanning has lobed forms blown, which are then sawn up, ground and polished.
Barbara Nanning combines tradition with innovation, Eastern opulence with Dutch austereness, freedom with structure and reason with emotion. Her work is a fusion of classical artisan methods and innovative materials. As a result, her language does not comply with an existing one, but forms a universe all of its own.

In honor of its esteemed fifty-year history, Fuller Craft presents the exhibition Striking Gold. This invitational exhibition marks the institution’s “golden anniversary” as it probes the storied history of gold as an artistic material as well as its cultural, historical, and political associations. The inclusion of gold in the selected works reveals clear intention and purpose, rather than being used for purely decorative effect. In each case gold serves as the subject, as well as a material property of the work.
The exhibition is co-curated by Suzanne Ramljak, an art historian, writer, curator, and former editor of Metalsmith magazine, and Beth McLaughlin, Fuller Craft’s Chief Curator of Exhibitions and Collections.

Pierre Marie Giraud specializes in unique pieces by international artists working in ceramics, glass and decorative arts. Founded in Brussels in 2005, the gallery represents an exceptional group of established artists from Europe, North America, Japan and Africa, and regularly showcases their work in both solo and thematic exhibitions. The minimalist and light-filled interiors of the gallery, which is housed in an elegant nineteenth-century townhouse, reflect Giraud’s considered approach towards the presentation and appreciation of contemporary applied art. At the same time, the spaces are domestic in scale, which reinforces the link between art and everyday life. The gallery is known for exhibiting only the very best and most original makers, and work that embodies conceptual, technical and aesthetic innovation. Pierre Marie Giraud is internationally recognized for his unparalleled expertise in ceramics. He regularly advises European and American museums on collection acquisitions and curatorial issues, and collaborates with a number of institutions on the promotion of contemporary ceramics. The gallery participates in fairs such as Design Basel and Design Miami, and is also noted for producing monographic publications on the artists featured in the exhibition programme.

For the Van Eyck year, Design Museum Ghent will be presenting a large exhibition from 13 March on innovative and diverse use of colors. “Kleureyck. Van Eyck colors in design ’starts from Jan van Eyck’s unseen use of color and shows what color means for contemporary designers.
For Collectible in Brussels, curator Siegrid Demyttenaere selected a few “Kleureycke” pieces from the collection of Design Museum Ghent as a preview. My works ‘Verre églomisé’ & ‘Flower Vase’ will also be shown here.
From March 13 – september the objects will be on display in the Design Museum Gent in a pigment trail with around 100 design pieces, arranged according to color groups. The selected pieces show a special attention to the use of color, craftsmanship and research, just like the work of Jan van Eyck.

Artist in the Spotlight – Barbara Nanning
J. Lohmann Gallery, New York
J. Lohmann Gallery is pleased to present a new collection of glass designs by the artist Barbara Nanning.
Nanning’s mesmerizing sculptures unite tradition with innovation and are a fusion of carefully chosen unconventionally combined elements.
Barbara unites classical artistic methods with an innovative use of materials to achieve an entirely unique language of form, one which often evolves in the making process. As Barbara notes “after each of my trips abroad I return to my studio with a profusion of new ideas about colour, design and texture that has profoundly influenced my work.” Nanning sets down her inspiration in dozens of sketches, drawings and photos that function as a memory aid.
Nanning continues: “I see myself as a material bound artist, inventing and developing unusual methods and techniques with new surface textures. I heavily rely on the malleability of the material and explore experimentally the boundaries of what is possible. With my work I try to capture the essence of motion and growth”. Nature, both organic and inorganic, is a constant source of inspiration for Nanning. She examines crystals, jellyfish, flowers and micro organisms with an almost nineteenth century fascination for form, structure and geometry. The designer combines regularity with fluidity, order with chaos and the rigid with the informal.
Barbara Nanning was born in The Netherlands and lives and works in Amsterdam. She graduated from the prestigious Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and is the recipient of several international awards. Nanning’s work is represented in the permanent collections of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, among many other important museums.
