Byzantium kwam van de zesde eeuw tot in de vroege middeleeuwen in het oosten van het voormalige Romeinse Rijk tot grote bloei. Op cultureel gebied staat deze periode bekend om figuratieve versieringen in kerken. Vorsten lieten moza\u00efek aanbrengen, zoals in de basiliek van San Vitale in Ravenna, door voorstellingen te maken van gekleurde en vergulde keramische tegeltjes. De schilder Gustav Klimt gaf er in het begin van de 20ste eeuw een nieuwe draai aan door het maken van grote friezen in de eetzaal van Palais Stoclet te Brussel.
