Nautilus IJburg Amsterdam (NL) 2008
The entrance gate of the Theo Frenkelhof in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Nautilus, imagines an eccentric landscape. It invites to submerging in a magical fantasy world, by showing a different reality, which could as well be located somewhere in the universe, under the sea or in the interior of the earth, yet always in the here and now.
Particular to the project is that the purchasers and the tenants of the Theo Frenkelhof were given the art work as a gift from de Alliantie and from Waterstad 3.

Hanging Flower bud: Height 400 cm, Width 210 cm.
Standing Flower: Height 162 cm, Width 250 cm.
What initially began around 1996 as a few isolated objects inspired by flower buds and seed capsules gradually developed into a separate group.
Compactly composed buds evolved into lush flowers with leaves that seem to wave in the wind.
In their turn, the flowers transformed into underwater beings swaying along on the currents.

Galaxy, TNO/TPD, Eindhoven (NL) 1999
In 1999 Cor Unum was given the honor of developing a ceramic art project, to grace the new main building of TNO, then scheduled
to be built in Eindhoven (NL).
Cor Unum invited Amsterdam based Barbara Nanning to design the objects that together would form the imposing ceramic work
of art that now adorns this new building.
For her design of applied art in the new TNO building Barbara Nanning choose the theme of everlasting motion, a movement without end or beginning, the circle of life.
The artwork consists of 250 objects. These objects are placed so as to create an atmosphere of movement as they proceed from the atrium and wind their colorful way through the floors of the building utilizing the various concrete piers and pillars.
Barbara Nanning is a well known ceramic and glass designer in The Netherlands. Her work meets with great approval and appreciation accross the globe.
Originally a ceramist, she is constantly pursuing the limits and bounds of ceramic design.
An example: by developing a new colorful ‘skin’, built up from many layers filled with various types of sand and pure pigments, she has created new dimensions for contemporary ceramic art.
The bright, intense colors and a typical velvety feel make her work uniquely recognizable and very much admired.

Reclining Flowers Aalsmeer & Driebergen (NL) 1997-1999
Ceramic, glazed, terrazzo
ø 220 cm.
What initially began around 1996 as a few isolated objects inspired by flower buds and seed capsules gradually developed into a separate group.
Buds were also the departure point for several monumental commissions, such as for the Municipality of Aalsmeer, location Legmeerdijk / Hornmeerpark (1997) and for the Nationale Politie, Hoofdstraat 54 in Driebergen (1999). In collaboration with architect Paul van Leeuwen and the Hague-based company Struktuur ’68, man-sized sculptures arose that were assembled from glazed segments.
For these and many other of her monumental commissions, Nanning makes use of advanced computer designs. Moreover, she has developed types of finishes new to the industry that can be applied in large-scale projects.
Infinite Movement – VU (NL) 1992
I always work from the circle, it’s an archetype. The center of the circle is a resting point, from there, the movement emanates …
That’s what I do: capturing the essence of movement and growth in my work.
This is visualised by this sculpture Infinite Movement.
Location: Free University Amsterdam, Buitenveldertselaan, Buitenveldert, The Netherlands.
